LK-99 (from the Lee-Kim 1999 research)[1] is a gray–black, polycrystalline compound, made by doping lead‒apatite with copper. A team from Korea University led by Lee Sukbae (이석배) and Kim Ji-Hoon (김지훈) began evaluating this material as a potential superconductor starting in 1999.[2]:1 In 2023, they published preprints claiming that it acts as a room-temperature superconductor[2]:8 with zero resistance and Meissner effect,[2]:1 at temperatures of up to 400 K(127 °C;260 °F) at ambient pressure.[1][3][2]:1
Many different labs attempted to replicate the work, and were able to reach initial results within weeks, as the process of producing the material is relatively straightforward.[4] 截至2023年8月10日[update] the growing consensus is that it is not a superconductor at any temperature,[5][6][7][8] but that impurities common to the proposed synthesis could produce resistance drops and magnetic response in small samples,[9][10][11] that mimic transitions in superconductors.[12][13]
While no replications have gone through the peer-review process of a journal, the first attempted replications were reviewed by a materials science lab and identified ferromagnetic and diamagnetic causes for observed partial levitation.[14] Other labs that observed partial levitation similar to that reported in the original paper found diamagnetism but no superconductivity.
The initial studies announcing the discovery of LK-99 were uploaded to arXiv, an open-access preprint archive. Lee later claimed the uploaded preprint papers were incomplete,[15] and coauthor Kim Hyun-Tak (김현탁) stated that one of the papers contained flaws.[16]
